Aurora Halle McPhee, a girl of humble (some might say unconventional) background, cannot believe her luck when she is betrothed to the dashing, well-bred Harland Podell. Aurora soon learns, however, that the match is too good to be true when the nuptials are interrupted--by the brother of the groom's wife!
Kenyon Warriner, Earl of Windham, is determined to foil that bigamous bounder Podell, before he disgraces another innocent female as he did Kenyon's own sister. The earl will save Miss McPhee's honor.
Even if he must wed her himself...
A Worthy Wife edition by Barbara Metzger Romance eBooks
Full of impossible and impossibly funny characters, this Metzger romp will have you in stitches. Although the Earl of Windham is an impetuous, hot tempered boor who doesn't deserve Aurora McPhee, the impulsive if misguided act of marrying her gives him his just deserts and finally makes him a little better than he really is. Aurora at 19 has her hands full with a 30 year old spoiled lout whose most loverly words are " Good girl, I knew you had bottom". He has discovered in addition to bottom, she has all the other lovely attributes of a beautiful young woman - and he lusts after them. What he didn't count on was her practicality, honor, and bulldog faith in humanity, which leads her to champion a whole host of unlikely individuals of dubious character, a love of animals that attracts the most interesting menagerie, and relatives that would have loved the creature from the black lagoon...all of which Windham is driven nearly to death over. Goodness prevails, lives are disrupted, ugly becomes beautiful and love conquers all. What's not to like. Purrrfect!Product details

A Worthy Wife edition by Barbara Metzger Romance eBooks Reviews
I like Barbara Metzger, but there is just too much going on in this book. The characters and the actions that they took got on my nerves. Reading this book was not fun or relaxing.
While Aurora is taking on strays from every direction and finding a few more people to rescue her poor husband is intent on finding out who she really is, but also trying to avoid wearing his spectacles which he sorely needs. And even when Aurora is calm and not disruptive, or stressfull to Lord Windham something or someone else is. This book is obviously the zany work of Ms Metzger, no one else could have so many characters all seemingly bonkers in the same book and still have an even half decent story, The Worthy Wife is Worthy of being read!
The poor hero didn't know what he was in for when he rescued the heroine from marriage to a bigamist . His staid, placid middle-aged life turned into a roiling broth of confusion and adventure as he married her himself, then watched as she rescued decrepit horses, unemployed one-armed military vets, pregnant servants and finally himself and nurtured them all with her delightful and giving self. This is a very funny story with lots of love and an excellent happy ever after ending.
Too much is sometimes a bad thing. That's how I felt about the plot. It was ridiculous - like a circus act. The heroine became annoying with each "innocent" scrape she would find herself in, and the unlikely situations of the mariad of characters were just one after the other. It seemed like the purpose of yet another "situation" was just to foil the earl from bedding his wife ... ludicrous. I like fun light reads, but would not recommend this one.
All the romance and sexual tension without wasting story space on graphic sex scenes. You're hooked from the first page. Kept me up all night; I couldn't put it down! The Earl interrupts a wedding to stop the bride from ruin by marrying a bigamist and ends up marrying her himself within the hour feeling honor bound. Though they've just met, the sparks fly as love quickly develops. Unfortunately, things keep happening to prevent the consummation and frustrations extreme as mystery and mayhem keep them apart. An honorable hero who hates scandal and a caring, intelligent but naive heroine with a penchant for saving the world is a beautiful, totally entertaining read!
I love Metzger stories. They are nonstop fun. This one was funny, sweet, clean, and entertaining. Although this author's style has a deliberate ridiculous aspect in each of her books, the ridiculous in this one swamped the main story. The monkey, the frogs, the huge cast of characters became an interruption instead of interesting. Still, it is a fun read just not her best.
I love Barbara Metzger's humor and the fun she seems to have had when writing her little Regencies, but I could not quite warm up to this one. Yes, it's cute; there are lots of funny scenes and humorous situations and a cast of thousands (so it seemed to me) of quirky characters, but it was just too, too crazy and hyper for me.
If you read Regencies for the romance aspect, this one has 3 couples with developing romances but all are shallow, superficial and silly.
Maybe I read this on a bad day. I could have found it crazy-silly-entertaining, but instead it was never-ending and crazy-silly-annoying. Thankfully, there are many more Metzger Regencies out there for me to enjoy.
